Human history shows that tattoos have served in many diverse cultures as rites of passage, marks of status and rank, symbols of religious and spiritual devotion, decorations for bravery, sexual lures and marks of fertility, pledges of love, punishment, amulets and talismans, protection, and as the marks of outcasts, slaves and convicts.

Celtic Tattoos - History

Pre-Christian Celtic as well as central and northern European tribes were often heavily tattooed, according to surviving accounts. A Celtic tribe in central & northern Scotland, the Picts, used Celtic tattoos with elaborate dark blue woad (or possibly copper for the blue tone) designs, in fact, the Latin word Picti is taken to mean painted or tattooed people.

Today, Celtic tattoos include many of these designs.  Celtic knots make for attractive background, ornamentation, or the main focus of your tattoo.  Throughout this site you will find many different examples of Celtic tattoos, Celtic knots, and pictures from early Christian writings such as the Book of Kells.
