Some historians have theorized that early celtic religion prevented their depicting creatures realistically, thus giving rise to celtic knotwork in the forms of animals and people. These designs, although pre-christian, still found their way into early christian writtings and manuscripts such as the Book of Kells and others.

The use of animals in Celtic tattooing can add great accent to you design, or can be a beautiful center piece for your design. The most common animals depicted in Celtic knotwork are traditionally dogs, birds, fish and cats, although there has been great interpretation when it comes to modern tattooing in the Celtic style.
